World Languages
Knox County Schools recognizes the importance of preparing students to compete in the global community. To be successful, our students must enter the workforce with expanded cultural horizons and increased communication skills.
Understanding that language and communication are at the core of human interaction, Knox County Schools offers instruction in six languages: Chinese, French, German, Latin, Russian, and Spanish. All high schools offer a selection of languages. The curricula for all language courses are aligned with our state curriculum and standards. Course descriptions are available in the Knox County Program of Studies.
The World Language curriculum is grounded in the five components of the National Foreign Language Standards which:
- promote communication and interaction (Standard #1 - Communication)
- provide students with the knowledge and understanding of their own and other cultures (Standard #2 - Culture)
- promote the use of language study to interact within and across disciplines (Standard #3 - Connections)
- provide students with knowledge and understanding of their own and other languages (Standard #4 - Comparisons)
- increase students' opportunities to function as global citizens and experience the language beyond the school setting (Standard #5 - Communities)
